Tony Iommi also used heavier gauge strings and droped tuning to not only enable himself to play more smoothly but it also gave him a unique and (at the time) a fresh new sound.I believe that his accident occurred on his last day of work as he was leaving to tour with sabbath. I have played the guitar for 15 years now and for the last two years I have been dealing with an afflicted hand myself. I was involved in an industrial accident in which my left hand was partially degloved. I ended up only losing my ring finger but my middle and small fingers have no feeling and limited range of motion. I find that the lower gauge strings and whole step down tuning make it easier to play. I've never really liked capos or open tuning so I never really bothered messing with them too much. The nerve damage is what makes it tricky. Being able to feel what string you are on and trying not to bump any other string while playing. With practice You start to get a sense of where you are without looking. Anyway, good luck.

Oh wow, thank you everyone for all of this information, sorry 5U4G about your accident, my boyfiends was caused by a motorcycle chain that cut off the tips of ring and middle finger just before the nuckle. We are definitely going to try all suggestions and be checking out all of these sites. You all are great:):)
