I'm tryin to help out my son with guitar basics b4 i buy him one. could somebody just explain the notes of each string and the frets? just the basics. thank you

Well, typically a Guitar is tuned from 'top' to 'bottom'in EADGBE tuning, topmost string E, next string A, etc....this is normally called A 440 or concert tuning for a guitar.
You can walk up by half-steps along every string to find all the notes as you go. You fret a string just a little in front of the fret, as close to it as you can be without being on top of it.

Akara is correct. Typical tuning is E-A-D-G-B-E, low to high. From there standard music theroy takes over. A guitar is fretted in octaves divided in this cycle:

A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#-...back to A to be repeated.

I just wanted to point out that I find it cool that you don't use an amp ;P
I'm stuck without one right now, I'm playing through my sound card...it's killing my poor little composite speakers :(
