I know I should be resting my left hand and wrist today, but I just couldn't resist...that Les Paul was sitting there, staring at me with a tear in her eye, saying "Come play with me."

Anyway, here is an example of why I do it my way.

A few minutes ago...I was messing around again with the Blackmore backing track and instead of playing in G minor pentatonic and G natural Minor, I decide to use the Bb Ionian mode and I really love the flavour it gave the overall sound, so I clicked record to prevent me for forgetting it.

I will definitely be using this little riff in a song of my own.

Here is a short 18 second (439 kb) clip if anyone wants to hear the results.

Play it cranked up as high as you can, hehe.

Hey, that sounds cool! Good tone too. Made me wanna jam too! Did you get the Blackmore jam track from the RiffInteractive lesson CD-ROM or from my Rock Legends Jam Track CD/Download? Just wondering.
Bb Ionian mode is the Bb major scale, and Gm is the relative minor of Bb major. Playing modes within the key you're in does give your fingers and ears a new outlook on what to improvise with. That's why I like messing with them, even on the simplest of jams/backing tracks. It can get boring to play the beloved minor pentatonic all day.   :-)

I have been teaching myself music so PLEASE correct me if I am wrong.

If my understanding of the scales and modes are correct in how they relate to each other...

In addition to the 3 scales noted above, could I have also substituted the following modes / scales:

C Dorian
D Phrygian
Eb Lydian
F Mixolydian
G Aeolian
A Locrian
G melodic minor
G harmonic minor
G major blues
G minor blues
Bb major pentatonic

It was on Lyle’s Loops Vol. 2 – Rock Legends Jam Tracks, download.

I ordered them a couple days ago, hehe.

Yes, those would be the modes in Bb.
G melodic minor isn't in there but could sound good I guess.
