I am trying to figure out how to play lead in the style of the Dead. I can play most rythm parts. But I can't seem to figure out what kind of scales Jerry and Bobby play when they play lead. I am familiar with major and minor scales and pentanonic minor and major scales. Are they mostly arpegiating (that is what seems to be happening in most rythm parts)or playing other scales such as enharmonic etc. I want to be able to improvise over their music. I guess if I learn all of the arpegios I will be able to do this, but I don't think that this is what Jerry does. I appreciate your help.

I found this sight that shows some good scales to use for several songs by the Grateful Dead.
