Depending on how load you want to paly, a smaller amp can be advantageous. To get that really great sound you need to overdrive the amp a bit, this is particularly true for tube amps. A 30-40 watt all tube combo amp (maybe one 12" celestion speaker) can keep up with most drummers and allow you get that really cool overdrive. If you get in a bigger venue you can mike the amp and still keep that stage voluem low. Vocalists like that.
