I use these D chord voicing in some of my own stuff, usually with hammer-ons/pick-offs. My question relates to the fact that I use it over or substituting for G. I guess I don't understand music theory very well, but I am wondering why it seems to "work."

I know that D is the 5th of G and B (used in the second voicing) in the 3d, but the A is a 2nd. Does anybody know why this works, incorporating music theory?

EDIT:
I guess in tab in would be this:

---0---0---0------
---1---1---1------
---2-h-3-p-2------
---0---0---0------

It sounds fine on its own, but I am wondering why it works well with G.0

Nevermind, I got this answered in another forum. I misstated the fingering anyway. As it turns out, it is really only a double stop on the G and B strings, which yields a 3rd and 5th to G and a Gadd9.

I tried to edit out my sloppy edit that I tagged to the bottom of the original post.

Thanks anyway.

Wow, it must be nice to know music theory! I tend to just play whatever sounds good, Improv is my friend :)

LOL. I only wish I knew music theory. I only know enough to keep me in trouble.
