Progressive Rock Guitarists - Tuesday - Week 3

Today's lick is in the style reminiscent of the guitarist Joe Satriani. His smooth and soulful approach to melodic and harmonic phrasing can be heard throughout any of his stellar recordings. This Lydian arpeggio lick takes you from the lowest note on the guitar, the open low E string, to one of the highest notes playable on the high E string. This series of notes climbs the fret board as an E6/9#11 arpeggio. The scale tones for this arpeggio are root, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, #11th. When the lick reaches the 18th fret of the 1st string, this is where the #11th tone is and it is also the 15th fret of the 3rd string. The #11th is the same tone as a #4th and this is where you'll hear the uniqueness of the Lydian mode.
