Progressive Rock Guitarists - Wednesday - Week 3

In today's example of playing the Lydian mode to create a lick that you can use for your own improvisations, you will be combining two different licks together. The looping jam track for today's lick has the chords Emin7 - Fmaj9. This is considered a 3-4 chord sequence in the key of Cmaj. For the first half of the lick, you'll be playing a familiar blues riff in A minor, which is the relative minor in the key of C. The second half of the lick is where you employ the F Lydian scale. Not only do will you play the scale, but with a technique referred to as "pedaling or intervalic expansion." You'll play the scale descending from F, the root, and after you pick each of the next scale tones, you'll repeatedly return to the F note at the 13th fret of the high E string which increases or "expands" the distance between the intervals in the Lydian scale.
