Vintage Guitar Magazine Presents:
FRETPRINTS

by Wolf Marshall

Subject: Allman Joy

Fig.1.
Our third lick is a textbook country-rock line in standard tuning articulated with a flat pick. Licks like this created a template for future stylists in the genre. Crank the gain back up for this passage to achieve a singing, smooth quality and select both humbuckers. The lick is played over a repeated E to A chord vamp. Here, Duane used the E major pentatonic scale as the melodic framework and works the A note strategically into the patterns. Also notable are the wide string bend in bar two and the repeated riff-like patterns in bar three. The lick further demonstrates Duane's use of the stock E major pentatonic box at the 9th position and the extension into the related 12th position (in bar four).
