Rock and Roll Guitar Instrumentals Today's lick is emblematic of the rockabilly guitar style. This lick functions as a riff (repeated figure) and can be played through a series of chord changes (such as a 12-bar blues progression) or over a single vamped chord. The riff is in A and makes use of a compact but effective 2-beat motive (A-A-E-E sharp-F sharp) which is repeated consistently for three and a half bars. The first two notes on the open A string sound the root and are palm muted. The remaining three notes E, E sharp and F sharp are played as a rising chromatic line and are hammered on. Note that the chromatic passing tone E sharp (or F) in the lick purposefully connects and strengthens the melody of fifth (E) to sixth (F sharp). These two tones are crucial melody notes in blues and rock. The lick is processed with a bit of slapback echo (one tight repeat). Like yesterday's phrase it is situated in the open A chord position.
