British Blues Rock - Tuesday - Week 2

First Wave

Our lick for Tuesday is a rootsy phrase and exemplifies the influence of artists like Howlin' Wolf on the early British blues-rock movement. As is typical this phrase is played in Open G tuning. The lick is played with a slide to further strengthen the blues-rock connection. When playing slide make sure that you position the slide over the frets rather than between them as in normal finger fretting. The lick's basic pattern involves a repeating chord riff, facilitated by the open tuning, punctuated by slides to the upper register. The lick is arranged in a question-and-answer phrase structure. This type of riff was favored by the Stones' original guitarist Brian Jones. Jones was credited as being one of the first players to play authentic bottleneck slide guitar in England, and was an early champion of blues music in the British Invasion.
