Guitar F/X Licks - Friday - Week 2

The massive distortion sound was much favored by the heavy metal players of the late 1970s and 1980s. Preferred stompboxes include the Boss Overdrive and Distortion units as well as similar offerings by Ibanez and MXR. The latter brand was closely identified with metal icon Randy Rhoads, who redefined the art of hard rock guitar in the period. Randy used an MXR Distortion Plus to push his Marshall stacks "over the cliff." The Distortion Plus (and boxes of it type) is more radical than a Ibanez Tube Screamer or other analog "tube-style" overdrive pedals, and produces a sharper, more edgey distortion, well-suited to the excesses of modern metal. This type of distortion continues to be emblematic of the metal genre.

Today's lick is played on a Gibson Les Paul into a late-1970s MXR Distortion Plus and a Marshall stack. A bit of chorus via a late-1970s Boss Chorus Ensemble unit is added to fatten the sound and create a quasi-doubling effect. The lick is played over a heavy metal groove in the F# minor mode consisting of an F#-D-B-F# progression. The largely-diatonic phrase makes use of the F# Aeolian mode (F#-G#-A-B-C#-D-E) and incorporates a devilish C natural borrowed from the F# Blues Scale.
