Today's lick is an example of the "talking wah" approach used in guitar soloing, particularly in the rock genre. In this case the wah-wah pedal is rocked in time with the melody's internal rhythm imparting a vocalesque effect to certain frequencies. This is similar to the way in which a human voice enunciates sung and spoken phrases. In fact with this approach it helps to "sing" the melody and sync your wah-wah pedal motion to the phrasing. The melody is played in D minor and uses the D minor pentatonic scale (D-F-G-A-C) exclusively. The lick has varied rhythmic components ranging from long, sustained notes to quick riff flurries. These elements influence the way the wah enunciates the phrase. The lick is again played on a Gibson ES-335 and a Crybaby wah-wah pedal plugged into a Soldano SLO-100 head and a vintage Marshall 4x12 cabinet.
