Evolution of Jazz Guitar - Monday - Week 4

Current Jazz Guitarists

Pat Metheny (b. 1954) was raised in a musical family and began on the french horn, switching to the guitar at the age of thirteen. He studied at the University of Miami where he also did club and studio work. After impressing vibist Gary Burton, he was invited to teach at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Shortly thereafter, he signed with the German recording label, ECM and began to crank out recordings under his own name. Today Pat is considered a superstar in the jazz community. Many of his recordings have won Grammys and he continues to play for packed concert halls wherever he goes.

Today's lick, in the style of Pat Metheny, is over a II -V - I progression. Although the II chord is a dominant seventh instead of a typical minor seventh. As you learn this lick, follow the fingerings on the virtual neck and you'll find this to lay very well on the guitar.
