Evolution of Jazz Guitar - Tuesday - Week 4

Current Jazz Guitarists

John Scofield was attracted to the likes of B.B. King and Otis Rush at an early age. By the time he was twelve he started figuring out their tunes on the guitar. A few years later, his instructor introduced him to the jazz stylings of Wes Montgomery, Tal Farlow and Jim Hall. After high school John attended Berklee College of Music where he worked with Gary Burton. He later broke into the scene while cutting his teeth with Airto, Billy Cobham and finally Miles Davis.

Today's lick begins with a classic minor sequence. The line outlines an F minor chord moving from its root to the 7th, the flatted 7th and the 6th degrees of the scale. The line that follows outlines an Ebmaj7#11 and creates a very angular melodic effect.
