Psychedelic '60s - Miller @ Monterey Pop Festival
The Moby Grape volunteered to be the first band to play on Saturday at the '67 Monterey Pop festival which featured bands like Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Booker T & many others. This week will feature some of the first licks played at this historic event.
Today's lick was inspired by phrases I learned while studying the Sitar from Ali Akbar Kahn. It was actually the very first ever lick played on Saturday at the Monterey Pop Festival after Tommy Smothers announced the Grape. Notice how I play the open 5th string (A) as the drone note while I play notes in the D major scale on the 4th string (D).
