Progressive Rock Guitarists - Monday - Week 2 |
Today's lick is based around a blues rock/funk groove in G minor. Two techniques are used in this ascending lick. The first is string skipping. On the first string, you start the lick with your 4th and 1st finger, then skip to the 3rd string and repeat the lick. Then move this lick shape up the neck every three frets, which becomes a diminished arpeggio until you run out of frets. Then you'll end the lick with a familiar blues riff. I find it important that when you play "outside" the scale, or you're experimenting with different tones, that you somehow incorporate a simple blues lick into the phrase. Try this lick to give your playing the style and sound of guitarist Steve Vai.
