Progressive Rock Guitarists - Tuesday - Week 4 |
In today's example, you'll play a simple melodic lick and transpose it up the fretboard creating a variation. The chords in the background and on the looping jam track are B, A and E. This is a 5-4-1 chord progression in the key of E major. In a chord progression like this, you can base your lick around the B mixolydian mode which is composed of the notes B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A. In the beginning of today's lick, you'll start on the third degree (D#) of the B mixolydian mode and climb up the scale to create a melodic and rhythmic theme. In measure 3 you'll play a variation of the lick in measure 1 by starting the climb again, this time from the root of the scale (B). Adding slight vibrato to each note will give your guitar a smoother and fatter tone as you play today's lick.
