Another way of creating variations of a theme is to play a simple lick and repeat it, then changing the notes at the end of each lick. Today's lick starts off establishing the theme within the first 3 notes. You'll repeat this theme in the next two measures and have a different ending at the end of each repeat. Primarily an instrumental guitarist, Joe Satriani's utilization of this technique in his melodic passages is a great example of how the `90s progressive rock guitarists used many types of fretboard and compositional techniques to make their music transcend beyond the rest.
