Here's a common grunge style lick using the lower "E" (6th) string to drone throughout the lick using the E Major scale pattern. This technique is great for power trios (guitar/bass/drum) adding extra depth to the sound. Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) used this technique and bands like the Smashing Pumpkins. Make sure you strum the 6th (E) & 5th (A) strings together. Try to avoid picking the other strings by muting with the palm of your picking hand.
