FRETPRINTS

by Wolf Marshall

Subject: Slick Slurring With The Sultan

Fig.2.
This energetic phrase contains the quick pull-off arpeggio riffs which Mark made famous in solos like "Sultans of Swing." These rolling figures are typically arranged across two strings to favor his fingerpicking approach. The phrase is based on relentless repetitions of a four 16th-note pattern unit played on each beat. Only two basic fingering shapes, one minor and one major, are used in the four-bar section. Note the melodic chord outlining of a D minor-C major-B flat major progression throughout.
These arpeggio patterns rely on the song's underlying harmony, reflect Mark's understated virtuosity, and illustrate his exploitation of chord shapes to generate good melodies. Again use the bridge and middle pickup tone and a hint of echo.
