Vintage Guitar Magazine Presents:
FRETPRINTS

by Wolf Marshall

Subject: Carlos' Latin Rock

Fig.2.
Our second lick is in D minor, is played over a slower moody Latin rock groove and features a silky, sustaining overdrive distortion tone. The slinky bends throughout are familiar Santana elements, especially the opening articulated bend line. Note the use of the crucial ninth tone E in bars 4 and 5.
This is a perfect example of the modal jazz influence colliding with Carlos’ blues-rock background to produce an uncommon but unmistakable statement. The held E note is sustained with amp feedback for a horn-like effect. The rising D minor 9 arpeggio in bar 5 is another jazz mannerism thrown into the mix. The concluding line in bar 6 combines a modal fragment with a bluesy bend-and-release figure.
