Golden Age of Guitar Instrumentals - Thursday - Week 2

Rock and Roll Guitar Instrumentals
The lick of the day for August 10 is a rootsy melody typical of the earliest days of instrumental rock `n' roll. In this period the merging of different styles in the new genre was in full swing. Today's lick captures that spirit. It contains a mix of funky Delta blues with country music. The lick is played in D and is located in the first position. Note the use of the D major chord throughout the figure. It is useful to think of this lick as being based physically on the open D chord shape. The single-note phrases pose blues-based D minor pentatonic lines over the D major chord for a colorful and characteristic effect. The single-note lines incorporate familiar string bends on the F (E sharp) notes that heighten the minor-major ambiguity essential to blues and rock `n' roll. This blurred minor-major sound has remained a component of virtually all forms of pop and rock music ever since.
