Slide Guitar for Beginners - part 5

Lesson Sample

Lyle: Listen to the Lesson Sample to hear what you'll be learning in this lesson which is in the key of G, standard tuning. Here's the looping jam track you'll use to practice the riffs with:

jam track in G

Lyle: The first riff I want to show you uses 3 little riffs like this:

riff 1 example

Lyle: For each one of those riff positions, you'll repeat them like this:

riff 1

Lyle: Riff 1 is how the Lesson Sample starts. If you listen to riff 1, then the Lesson Sample, you'll recognize it.

Lyle: Any questions about riff 1?

roy: What scale is this in?

Lyle: It's based off the G minor pentatonic scale:

Rich: When you are playing that fast, how do you manage extra string noise?

Lyle: I mute the 1st string with the 3rd finger of my right hand, the index finger of my left hand is dragging softly on the strings behind the slide.

Lyle: The next riff is like the opposite of riff 1:

riff 2 example

Lyle: Practice riff 2 example, then try it for real like this:

riff 2

Lyle: Riff 3 is just a little more complex. Try learning this example first before learning the real riff:

riff 3 example

Lyle: Now take that riff and repeat it like this:

riff 3

Lyle: The last riff you need to learn from the Lesson Sample is an ascending chordal riff that goes like this:

riff 4

Lyle: Take all 4 riffs and play them together back to back to recreate the solo from the Lesson Sample. Use the Lesson Sample to play along with to help refresh your memory. Once you have memorized these riffs try mixing them up in any order you want as you practice along with the looping jam track.

Lyle: That's all for this lesson and series. I suggest you follow up these lessons with Slide Guitar II - Open Tunings as your next CD-ROM.
