Jazz Connection - Monday - Week 3 |
Today's II-V-I lick is in the key of C. The first bar is a D minor (C major) scale phrase leading into a Ab diminished phrase which creates a touch of tension for the G7 chord before resolving to C. This is an easy going 8th-note line that sounds good with alternate picking. Practice it over the jam track which is a medium tempo II-V-I in C. (Dm7-G7-Cmaj7). When you reach the I (Cmaj7) add your own ideas using a C major or C major pentatonic scale. Refer to my intro text if you don't know the jazz-blues progression. Play the lick over bars 3, 4 and 5. It may feel weird at first, keeping your place, but stay with it. Count out loud if you need to. When you reach the I chord, in this case C7, play an F major or F major pentatonic scale. For you more experienced players, try this; Transpose this lick up to Am7-D7-G (around the 10th fret) and play it again over bars 9-10 and 11. Fill in the in-between bars with your own ideas.
