Jazz Connection - Tuesday - Week 4

Wes Montgomery inspired today's "Lick of the Day". It demonstrates the use of diminished chords as passing sounds. The lick is played over Gm7 and is a F major scale (top notes of each chord) beginning on G ascending up to D. It then changes to a Gm7 arpeggio (with Gm7 chords) leading to the final Gm7. I play this last Gm7 with my 2nd finger performing a double stop on the 4th and 5th strings. It can also be played with individual fingers. All of the Ebdim7 chords in this phrase hint at D7b9 which is the V chord of Gm7, a common jazz trick. Once you learn the line, move it to other keys. The jam track is a Gm7 vamp and is a great groove to practice the lick over. Just play it in 1/2 time (or slower) at first until you get it down.
