Teacher: Welcome class to the lesson on Country Rock Legends. This lesson cover part 1 of The Eagles style. I'm having a problem with my multi track recorder so I'll update the Lesson sample later in the archive. As most of you know The Eagles are one of the most well-known country rock bands of the '70s and '80s and on. In the early days of The Eagles they had a heavy country sound and progressed from there. This lesson will cover the early period. Teacher: Here's the rhythm track and I will give you several licks in this lesson. Looping Jam Track 1 Lowband Teacher: This rhythm starts with E and E sus. Then moving to B and F#m. The bridge uses C#m and A and then F#m and B. Let's get started with the first country rock lick. Part 1 - Lick 1 Part 1 - Lick 1 Teacher: Most of these licks are in the E Major Pentatonic. We will focus on playing double stop bends. This gives to licks a country type sound. Here's the E Major Pentatonic scale. E Major Pentatonic Teacher: This pattern is different than the pentatonic box patterns. Notice the scale starts on the E. marc: On the first lick are you bending both notes at the same time. Teacher: Marc, all the bends are on the 2nd string (B) in the first bar. The bends shift to the 3rd string when you shift positions. Here's the next lick. Part 1 - Lick 2 Part 1 - Lick 2 Teacher: For this lick you start with the 3rd finger bending the 2nd string then shift to bending using your 1st finger on the 5th fret/2nd striing. Using the first finger to bend can be quite challenging. Especially trying to keep the bending note in pitch. Here's the next lick. Part 1 - Lick 3 Part 1 - Lick 3 Teacher: Here's another example using the begging of the last lick, however this time you shift up the neck using major and min intervals. The ending of the lick plays in the main box pattern of the E Major Pentatonic. Here's the scale. E Major Pentatonic Scale Teacher: Here's the next lick. Part 1 - Lick 4 Part 1 - Lick 4 Teacher: This lick uses the same Major Pentatonic box pattern I just gave you. Notice how you start with a bending triple-stop, then shifting to the double-stop where you use the 1st finger to bend. Later you use hammer-ons using the more double-stops and then ending by playing intervals. This lick has a heavy country sound. OK, let's jump to the next lick. Part 1 - Lick 5 Part 1 - Lick 5 Teacher: This lick uses the same pattern as well, this time playing a series of hammer-on intervals. And then playing the triple-stop bend and double-stop bend using the 1st finger. Here's the next lick. Part 1 - Lick 6 Part 1 - Lick 6 Bill: Are you covering both 12 fret notes with your pinky? Teacher: Bill, you anchor your 4th finger on the 1st string, however you use the 3rd finger on the 2nd string. This allows you to shift the melody line on the 2nd string. The interactive tab will show you the fingering. Here's the next lick. Part 1 - Lick 7 Part 1 - Lick 7 Teacher: This is an interesting lick! You use the E Major Pentatonic box pattern and descend using bending notes while you hold down the pedal note on the 12th fret/1st string. You will need to finger pick in order to play this sequence of notes. This lick is a great one to build up your first finger bending technique. You can also practice this lick playing an ascending pattern as well. Here's the next lick. Part 1 - Lick 8 Part 1 - Lick 8 Teacher: This lick uses more hammer-on double-stops as well. Notice the sliding double-stop notes as well, then playing the bending double-stops again. This next lick is played over the chord changes in the progression. Part 1 - Lick 9 Part 1 - Lick 9 Teacher: Notice how the Major Pentatonic patterns move over the chords. You use bending triple-stops in the beginning bars. Notice how the pattern changes while playing over the F#m. The ending of the lick uses a B Major Pentatonic over the B chord.
