								| | Golden Age of Guitar Instrumentals - Friday - Week 4 | | Surf Guitar Instrumentals Our final surf lick of the week is a driving low-register riff. Played over a B-C-B Phrygian accompaniment figure, this phrase is distinguished by its galloping 16th-note rhythm and relatively simple melody. The 16th-note articulations are played with alternating picking and are closely related to the tremolo picking technique of the surf guitar style. See yesterday's Lick of the Day for a demonstration of and more information about tremolo picking. The A (open 5th string) note is incorporated as a repeated pedal tone throughout the lick. Notice the alternation of this A note with the B, C and D of the melody. Also check out the hammered-on (open-string A note to a fretted B note) fingering approach in the second half of the lick. This bassline type of lick splits the difference between lead and accompaniment styles and pervades the surf music idiom.
