Vintage Guitar Magazine Presents:
FRETPRINTS

by Wolf Marshall

Subject: Allman's Shuffle

Fig.1.
The second lick is also a blues slide lick in Open E tuning but occurs over a faster shuffle groove in a different key. It is played over the IV-I (D7-A7) pattern of a blues progression in A. Back off the distortion on this one for a semi-clean tone with just enough gain for a little sustain and engage only the neck pickup. This phrase presents another favorite Allman blues box position with plenty of chord outlining in the melody. Check out the harmonica-like major third double-stop at the end of the phrase - this is a familiar Allman mannerism often heard in his solos. Again, be sure to employ frethand muting and pluck all the notes with your fingers.
