Fig.3. This lick exemplifies the sort of excitement Grant generated over a driving one-chord rock vamp. The phrase is played in F minor and makes use of many noteworthy traits of his later years. Chief among these are the reliance on minor pentatonic and blues scale licks, riff-based melodic structure, rhythmically-based patterns, imitation and double stops. The repeated legato figure in bar 4 is a staple of his style and was ubiquitous in his improvisations post-1966.
