Combining blues sounds with jazz melodies is a common practice by great players. Today's dominant 7th lick is just that. For A dom 7, it begins with a classic blues riff followed by an Em7 and D major arpeggio shapes resolving to the 3rd (C#). Play the first note (A) as a pickup. To add a cool jazz "decoration," play a quick 32nd note figure by adding a D note after the second high E. Pick the high E and pull-off the D and C notes.
