Jazz Connection - Tuesday - Week 2

Today's lick is another sequence for C minor pentatonic. It combines a descending scale phrase followed by an unusual five-note sequence ascending back to C on the high E string. I'm playing the first three notes as pickups with note four being accented on the downbeat of one. The picking is a bit tricky. Try this. Begin with an upstroke on the first note and alternate pick all notes until you reach the lowest note C. Let's stop here and practice the next five notes using the following picking. Pick the F and the next note (Bb) with consecutive downstrokes. Then up on the next (Eb) down on the C and up on the higher F. Play this five note figure over and over in even 8th notes to perfect the picking. Back to the lick, we continue the five-note sequence two more times, just up string groups. Practice the lick slow at first in 1/2 time over C samba play-along track. Play as 16th's or even 8th note triplets once you develop the technique.
