Jazz Connection - Thursday - Week 4

Today's chord lick is in the style of the great Joe Pass. It can be played over just Dm7 or G7, or a II-V, Dm7 to G7. The top notes of each chord outline the melody. It starts off with a easy Dm9 and descends using various Dm7 voicings leading into G7. The C#dim7 gives this lick it's jazz sound and serves as a tension chord setting up the final Dm7. The next bar begins with a traditional four-chord move for G7. Each chord has only 3 notes, yet still sounds powerful. The final move uses three- note 9th voicings (Ab9 to G9). Practice this lick over the Jam track which is a II-V progression (Dm7 to G7). Since most of the chords have only 3 or 4 notes, you need to mute the unused strings if you strum with a pick. The lick can also be plucked with with your right-hand thumb and fingers. The order of chords below are: Dm9, Dm7, Dm7, Dm7, C#dim7, Dm7, G7, Am7, Bbdim7, G, G7, Ab9, & G9.
