Evolution of Jazz Guitar - Monday - Week 5

Current Jazz Guitarists

John McLaughlin (b. 1942) got an early start in music at the age of nine. However, the piano was his first instrument, he finally made the switch to the guitar at the age of 12. A couple of years later, he was exposed to great jazz guitarists like Jim Hall, Django Reinhardt, Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel. Upon reaching adulthood he lived a few years in London and then moved to the United States to work with Tony Williams. In the early '70s he started the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which combined jazz-fusion with traditional Indian music harmony.

Today's lick in the style of John McLaughlin is short and sweet. Basically, you are playing a D7b9 arpeggio over an F7 chord, which creates a very interesting sound. Try resolving this arpeggio to an ordinary Bbmaj7 arpeggio.
